Creating a Web Page

This lesson will teach you how to create a new web page on a Drupal website hosted at the Baskin School of Engineering.

Before you begin, you will need to be logged into the web site you wish to add a page to. Logging in and logging out of web sites is covered in Logging In.

Once you are logged in, click the Add Content link in the menu on the left. If you do not see an Add Content link, then you probably don't have permission to edit the web site. In order to obtain permission, you should contact the site owner. The site owner's e-mail address is usually located in the footer. If you do not see an e-mail address there, please e-mail webmaster@soe.ucsc.edu to request access. Be sure to include the URL to the web site that you wish to edit.

After you click Add Content, you may select which type of content you want to create. For this lesson, we will choose Web Page.

When you click the Web Page link, you will be presented with a form that allows you to edit the page's title, body, menu settings, and possibly more. There are separate lessons for each additional field that you may be able to edit. Please consult those additional lessons for more information about each additional field.

While not required, it's a good idea to check the box to Provide A Menu Link so that your web page can be found by your users. The Menu Link Title field controls what title is displayed on the menu for this page. In most cases, that's the same as the Title listed at the top of the form, but if your page title is very long, you can use a shortened version to fit it into the menu. The Parent Item option allows you to control where in the menu heirarchy this page will appear. If you would like your new page to appear below the Home page, select Home from the Parent Item drop-down. The Weight option controls what order this page will appear among its siblings.

When you are done entering your page title, body and menu options, click the Save button at the bottom of the screen.
